Cats - New London Theatre - Poster (1981)

Original ‘Cats’ musical poster designed and printed by Dewyntners Ltd for Cameron Mackintosh & The Really Useful Theatre Company. 1981. Measures 52cm x 32cm. Condition: Outstanding.

This iconic 1981 ‘Cats’ poster was issued in the first year of the London production at New London Theatre and features many of the original cast members including Paul Nicholas and Brian Blessed.

Cameron Mackintosh engaged the advertising agency Dewynters to design the poster for the musical. After much back-and-forth, the agency presented a minimalist poster consisting of a pair of yellow feline eyes (with dancing silhouettes for the pupils) set against a black backdrop. The producers and the creative team loved the design but felt that the title — Practical Cats — looked out of place when paired with the image of the cat's eyes. The musical's title was thus shortened to just Cats

Cats is a musical composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber , based on the 1939 poetry collection “Old Possums Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Elliot. The musical includes the well-known song “Memory” as sung by Grizabella. In 2021, Cats will celebrate its 40th anniversary in the West End.
