Vitreous enamel sign Circa 1970s. Produced by “Burton”. Measures 71cm x 56cm. Burton manufacturer code ‘X96212’. Condition: Excellent in-situ condition. Drilled mounting holes. Small chip/loss at the bottom of the roundel.
An extremely rare sign from an iconic London landmark. Trafalgar Square Underground Station no longer exists (at least not in name). The station was merged into Charing Cross Station (along with Strand) upon the opening of the Jubilee Line in 1979. This sign is likely to have been in situ up to then and removed during the redevelopment. The signs were located on the trackside wall as shown in the photo.
Trafalgar Square is one of the best known sights in central London, home to the National Gallery and Nelson’s Column and is located immediately to the North West of Charing Cross. Trafalgar Square Underground Station was on the Bakerloo Line and was one of the original stations when the line opened in 1906.
