The First Les Misérables Poster - Barbican Theatre, London (1985)
A Musical - Les Misérables - RSC Barbican Theatre (1985)
Designed by Dewynters and published by the Royal Shakespeare Company/Barbican Theatre. Offset lithograph on thick paper stock. Size: 50.5cmcm x 32cm. Condition: Excellent. A few minor horizontal creases, top left corner has a fold mark.
The London production of Les Misérables by Cameron Mackintosh and the Royal Shakespeare Company opened at the Barbican Theatre, London in September 1985. After just two months, the show moved to the Palace Theatre and then the Sondheim Theatre becoming a global sensation and the longest-running musical in the West End.
This was the first poster issued to promote the opening of the show at the Barbican. It credits the production team but the cast had yet to be finalised when the poster was issued. Later posters do feature the originating cast names.
The striking artwork by Dewynters is an adaptation of the original book illustration by Emile Bayard and combined with the distinctive 'Caston Antique' typeface to form one of the most recognisable and iconic designs of the 20th Century.
Les Misérables is a musical adapted from French poet and novelist Victor Hugo's 1862 novel of the same name. The original French-language musical premiered in Paris in 1980 with direction by Robert Hossein.
