Rolling Stones Shop Sign - Carnaby Street, London
Designed by John Pasche (1945-). Laminate decal on 3mm acrylic cut out set upon an enamelled aluminium panel. Measures 61cm x 61cm. Excellent used condition. Provenance: Purchased from a former RS No.9 employee (information below).
This wonderful high-quality sign, featuring the iconic Rolling Stones logo, is from RS No.9 - the only Rolling Stones store in the world, located on the world-renowned Carnaby Street in London’s West End. As the photos show, this sign was one of two panels that made up a double-sided wall-mounted sign.
Carnaby Street’s history of music, art and retail from the 1960’s to the present day made it the ideal setting for the Rolling Stones store which opened in September 2020.
‘Tongue & Lips’
While in his last year of study in 1970, Pasche was recommended by the college to design a poster for The Rolling Stones for their 1970 European tour. That same year, he was asked by Mick Jagger to design the logo for the band. Using Jagger's mention of Kali in the singer's design brief as inspiration, Pasche designed a tongue and lips logo that evoked the Hindu goddess' common depiction with her tongue sticking out. He was paid just £50 and a further £200 in 1972. Pasche sold his copyright of the logo to the Rolling Stones via its commercial arm for £26,000 in 1984.
Provenance
This sign was purchased from a former employee at RS No.9 who was given the sign when they were replaced: “It was the high street sign that hung out the front of the store before it got refreshed with a new one (In May 2025) There were two metal plates either side of the original sign (this being one of them) and this is the better of the two. It was given to me during my time working at the store.”
