"Oxford Circus"
3-piece vitreous enamel sign in original bronze mounting frame. Measures 61cm (L) x 50cm (H). Condition: Excellent in-situ condition with just minor blemishes. Beautiful bronze frame (recently cleaned) with some minor marks. Presented on custom mdf backboard with embedded hanging slot.
This wonderful and original sign comes from Oxford Circus Station on the London Underground. Oxford Circus is the intersection of Oxford Street and Regent Street, the heart of London's shopping district. This style of sign was produced between 1950s-1980s and would have been displayed on the walls opposite the platform, facing awaiting passengers.
This sign predates the change of the Johnston typeface (late 1970s) most probably mid-late 1960s when many were installed with the arrival of the Victoria Line. These signs were still in place in 2005 (when the photo attached was taken) so It is likely that they were removed during the 2007 modernisation of the station. They were replaced with large full-height enamel panels.
Oxford Circus underground station opened in 1900 on the Central London Railway and was joined by the Bakerloo Railway in 1906 and Victoria Line in 1969.
