Bond Street Double-sided London Underground Enamel Platform Sign

£0.00
sold out

Bond Street - Enamel London Underground platform roundel sign

Double-sided Vitreous enamel sign Circa 1985. Measures 65cm x 65cm. Condition: Excellent in-situ condition. Some minor chips and damage to the sides. Production defect on one side (blue glaze on red roundel).

Bond Street Underground Station opened in 1900 on the Central London Railway (later Central line) and its entrance is located on Oxford Street close to Selfridges Department store.

These unusual double-sided signs would have been located in the platform or foot tunnels and were most probably removed In 2007 when Bond Street underwent a visual modernisation for the arrival of the Jubliee line.

The two sides have different roundel styles: one side being 1970s (larger text on dark blue bar) using the (old) Johnston typeface and the other a mid 1980s (smaller text, lighter blue bar) featuring New Johnston typeface. We don’t know for certain why these signs were produced with two different style roundels but I am currently discussing this with friends at TfL.
