Pair of Posters - International Tailoring Company (c.1910)

Produced by International Tailoring Company. Pair of posters, each measuring 53” x 22” (135cm x 56cm). Chromolithograph on paper. Condition: The main body of the posters are excellent. They have recently been linen-backed - we wanted to keep restoration to a minimum so their remains some loss to border.

These exceptionally rare shop posters were produced in around 1910 and would have been displayed in high-end tailors across the United States, who served as agents for ITC. The posters feature gentlemen modelling ‘Exclusive Models’ No. 450 and 451. A specialism of ITC was attire for leisure outings and sport. In these posters, each represent a popular leisure pursuit of the time, those being ice skating (holding skates under arm) and horse riding (holding a whip and wearing a tie bearing a horse shoe).

Established in 1896 by Jacob L. Reiss, The International Tailoring Company was a ‘tailor-to-the-trade’ and one of the largest manufacturers of made-to-measure gentlemen’s attire in the US for the first half of the 20th Century. Primarily based in Chicago, they also had plants in New York and Toronto. Their iconic building in Chicago - now on the US National Register - was built in 1916 and unlike the sweatshops typical among clothing manufacturers of the time, the factory enjoyed space, good natural light and a focus on the worker’s well being.
